The Badagry Local Government Area on Tuesday, 10th February, 2026 held a public hearing and presentation of draft bye-laws to key stakeholders as part of efforts to strengthen grassroots governance and promote inclusive law-making.
The exercise was organized by the Legislative Arm of the council led by the Leader of the House, Hon. Asokere Mautin Bankole, under the administration of the Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Hon. Babatunde Hunpe.
During the session, members of the legislative arm were commended by stakeholders for taking proactive legislative steps within a short period in office, describing the move as a sign of commitment to effective governance at the grassroots.
In his remarks, Hon. Asokere Mautin Bankole stated that the public hearing was aimed at ensuring transparency, public participation, and collective ownership of local laws. He explained that the draft bye-laws were carefully developed to address pressing local issues and enhance order, development, and service delivery across the local government.
The Chairman, Hon. Babatunde Hunpe, also used the occasion to brief the legislators on upcoming executive bills, including a proposed Tourism Bill which he said would soon be presented to the House for consideration and approval as part of efforts to boost local economic development.
Addressing concerns surrounding the proposed POS daily levy, the chairman reaffirmed that he was not aware of such a proposal at the time it surfaced. However, he noted that the situation had opened discussions on broader revenue-generation strategies for the local government. According to him, just as traders operating within markets pay daily levies, operators conducting business outside designated markets should also be made to pay appropriate levies to improve internally generated revenue and enhance service delivery for residents of Badagry Local Government Area.
Stakeholders present at the hearing were given the opportunity to review the draft bye-laws, raise observations, and suggest further measures aimed at supporting government policies and improving the welfare of the people of Badagry LGA. Their inputs, the legislative arm assured, would be carefully considered before the final passage of the bye-laws.
The public hearing underscores the commitment of the Badagry LG administration and legislative arm to participatory governance and people-focused development.
