The Enugu State Government has officially inaugurated a $20 million technology manufacturing factory in collaboration with Chinese multinational company Haier Global Business, marking a major step toward industrialisation and digital transformation in the South-East.
The facility, unveiled by Governor Peter Mbah, is designed to produce a range of technology products including smartphones, tablets, laptops, Android televisions, smart boards, and other digital devices targeted at the education and health sectors.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Governor Mbah described the project as a strategic move to reposition Enugu as a manufacturing and technology hub, shifting the state from a consumption-driven economy to one focused on production, innovation, and exports.
According to officials, the factory is expected to produce up to 200,000 units annually, create hundreds of direct and indirect jobs, and contribute significantly to skills development in the state. Plans are also underway to establish a Research and Development (R&D) centre and a training hub within the facility to equip young Nigerians with technical and digital skills.
The partnership represents one of the notable foreign direct investments attracted by the state government in recent times, with projections indicating further expansion that could exceed $30 million in the coming years.
Observers say the initiative could reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imported technology products while boosting local capacity, employment, and innovation.
The development underscores growing economic cooperation between Nigeria and China, particularly in technology and manufacturing sectors.
